The hill of Cenitz

The hill of Cenitz is a 1,2 hectare nature reserve in border of the “estran”, acquired by the Conservatory of Littoral in 2003, managed by the municipality of Guéthary. Headland overhanging the Ocean, it offers a fantastic view over raging waves in winter or sumptuous sunsets over the Bay of Biscay.

Narrow steep-sided paths cross it between heathers, gorses. Next to common animal species (rabbits, squirrels, woodcoks), we meet butterflies registered on the lists of protection NATURA 2000 (“Laineuse du Prunelier) and protected botanical species (Grémil prostré). It’s about a protected zone where the collection of fauna and flora is regulated. The “estran” is classified in fishing stationing from the foot of the hill up to the port of Guéthary. It is the object of annual scientific inventories since 2003 to follow the evolution of the natural environment.

On the Southern border of the hill, we can see along the stream “Baldareta”, a pond of wash for the seaweeds which are collected in autumn and which constitute a much in demand raw material by the food-processing and cosmetologic industries (gelling agent).
